TTF,

Roast capon with steamed jumbo asparagus (peeled, of course), and freshly baked yeast rolls to sop up the delicious pan sauce.

Nice! Peeled the asparagus, eh? Interesting.... Do the skins get "woody" when they get that large?

Dave,

In my opinion, the smaller, pencil thin asparagus don't need to be peeled. I also think that they have a lot less flavor than the jumbo. The trade off, is that you need to peel those larger stalks, or it'll be difficult to cut or bite through them. Sort of woody, like you said. And the stalks look nicer when peeled. The flavor near the bottom of the asparagus stalk is sweeter to me than that of the tips, and peeling increases your yield, allowing you to enjoy more of each stalk. More bang for your buck.

Interesting. I agree with you about the flavor of the larger stalks, and I will buy one size or the other based on my mood and availability. I've never tried peeling the large ones- have just cut more off and cooked the bejeebers out of them. I'll definitely try your method next time, though!

I've had steel cut oatmeal before.....takes longer to cook though. I usually cook my oatmeal with apples.

I soak it overnight, add more water, then cook like regular oatmeal.
I just had some roast beef done in a crork pot with brown rice and broccoli with cheese sauce...a very high fiber day!

New Year's was a travel day, so food was nothing special.  The next day, I was at my parents' house.  Knowing they have a nice seafood shop nearby, I got clams and other stuff to cook in a sauce.  Served it over Angel Hair pasta with some Orvieto.

Big heap of very hot buffalo chicken wings.

Back on a pretty strict low-carb routine. I had been pretty lax about it the last several months. But I gotta get serious again!

Mmmmm......chicken wings....

It was really cold and snowy today, so I thought I'd have some comfort food for lunch. I went over to the staff canteen (beg its pardon, restaurant) and ordered a good old-fashioned British meal of fish and chips. Bleah. It tasted as if it had been sitting in old, rancid fat since before Christmas. My comfort food went into the bin. :(

I peel the asparagus sometimes, too, but end up losing so much. Heck, snapping the ends even seems wasteful, at times.

Tom, Ronnie, are you going to tell me some good places to eat when I visit Chicago in April?

I met up with 'the Sheriff' (Scott) when we were in Chicago, and he took me to a cool Mexican place.

Great city. We really enjoyed ourselves.
