latest action (nonaction) of the US Supremes re:  2nd Amendment

http://www.cnn.com/2013/04/15/politics/scotus-new-york-gun-law/index.html?hpt=po_c2

they refused to hear an appeal from a lower court upholding the New York State law limiting the carrying firearms in public:

Quote
. . . At issue was whether the Constitution's Second Amendment provided a broad individual right to carry a handgun outside the home for self-defense.

New York's Penal Law 265.03(03) bans possession of a firearm in public, either openly or concealed, unless someone can show "proper cause" to secure a carry permit. Such proper cause has to be more than just a law-abiding citizen's desire for self-defense.

Since the high court refused to intervene, the state law stays in place. . . .

Why don't you ask a lawyer.  That's not how bankruptcy is done. . . . .

better ask a bankruptcy attorney or better yet:

Quote
Dear Yahoo!:
What happens to the stockholders of a company that files for bankruptcy?
Jim
Dallas, Texas

Dear Jim:
Rather than trying a single-word search (e.g., bankruptcy), we decided to type several key words in the Yahoo! search bar. We typed "what, happens, stockholders, bankrupt" and swiftly found a web site that helped us with the answer.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission web site provided a web page devoted to corporate bankruptcy and what happens to all those involved, including the company and its stockholders. . . .

http://www.sec.gov/investor/pubs/bankrupt.htm

The site further explains that when a company files under Chapter 7, the company stops all operations and goes completely out of business. A trustee is "appointed to 'liquidate' (sell) the company's assets and the money is used to pay off the debt, which may include debts to creditors and investors."

If the company files for Chapter 7, the stock is usually worthless and stockholders lose any money they've invested in the company.

In bankruptcy, those who take the least risk are paid first. Unfortunately for most of us, the shareholders are at the end of the payment line. First to be paid are the secured creditors, usually a bank. Second are unsecured creditors, such as banks, suppliers, or bondholders. Finally, stockholders are paid out -- a tough place to be for the "owners of the company."

. . .

Columbine and the Washington DC area shootings were done by snipers not within a building.

How is your armed guard going to protect against someone who acts as a sniper to pick off people from afar?

Columbine was inside the school and went on despite the best efforts of armed guards to stop it, two died if I recalled correctly.

without a constitutional amendment, which is not being suggested by anyone I know of, there will never be a resolution to the gun problem in this country.

armed guards in the schools, as suggested by some here and the NRA, won't prevent the violence, but might limit each individual act of violence somewhat, who can tell.  A person wanting to cause the violence will make it their first job to take out the guard and then continue on their planned mayhem

how many armed guards per school, anyone want to guess?

anyone want to pay for them???

The GOP is so schizophrenic these days that yesterday, Mitch McConnell filibustered himself. Unbelievable. They are truly putting the fun back in dysfunctional. And, now, DeMint is gone. The slow motion implosion would be painful to watch if it weren't so good for the countrty and the world.

how can you negotiate with these people?

according to CNN,

http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/07/politics/fiscal-cliff-senate-maneuvering/index.html?hpt=po_t1

Quote
Nevertheless, he pushed for a vote on it because he wanted to show that even some Democrats oppose giving the president that much authority, and he knew there was no way Democrats could garner the 60 votes typically needed for major legislation to pass the Senate.

But in the back-and-forth legislative chess match that often plays out on the Senate floor, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid instead moved to pass the measure with a 51-vote threshold, confident that he had at least that many votes to give Democrats a victory.

Recognizing that, McConnell objected to voting at the lower threshold, meaning he was filibustering the bill he had just pushed for a vote. . . .

McConnell agreed not to filibuster but reneged on his promise when he determined the Dems had the necessary majority to pass the bill.

You are quoting obama now. :)

Hey, I'm in favor of giving him everything he wants.

funny but wrong

I was paraphrasing statements of Boehner, the Speaker of the House
9  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Re: It wasn't a mandate but Obama's success speaks loudly on: Nov 11, 2012, 12:05PM
of course no mandate was earned

the President just won the electoral college vote and the popular vote, that is all,

clearly not enough for a mandate

especially for those who don't want any compromises made

"my way, or the highway"

wasn't this the second election in a row that the GOP was favored, at least at one time, to win the House and the Senate and failed to do so?

the GOP wins one of the two legislative bodies responsible for starting the process to create laws in our system but the President along with the Senate democratic majority has no mandate

clearly, no mandate Don't know
10  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Re: It wasn't a mandate but Obama's success speaks loudly on: Nov 10, 2012, 02:48PM
listened to, yes. But Americans also voted for a Republican House. The house writes the laws.

slight error there

Americans voted for a democratic senate, which, along with the House, writes the bills which if approved by the other body and signed by the President becomes the law.

the house is important but is only one third of the equation.

Mathews opened his show today with an apology for those statements, saying in essence, there was no excuse for them.

the Chicago Tribune endorses the President for reelection:

13  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Re: Final prediction time on: Nov 05, 2012, 08:06AM

as you just pointed out, the paper did not endorse the President but his challenger.

14  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Re: Final prediction time on: Nov 05, 2012, 07:54AM

perhaps you should read the link and/or the article itself, the paper did not endorse the President but endorsed his challenger.

15  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Final prediction time on: Nov 03, 2012, 04:43PM
Is it close enough to the final days to have a final prediction thread?

pick the winner of the Presidential race, indicate whether the electoral college and general votes agee, whether the Dems hold the Senate and whether the GOP holds the house

anyone want to play?

my predicton

Obama, by electoral college and popular vote both, dems hold the Senate and GOP holds the House.
16  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Re: should, could Sandy and its aftereffects change the election date? on: Nov 03, 2012, 03:46PM
TT

you should learn to read the first post, and other posts in a thread, before commenting

if you did you would have learned that the Congress sets the date for the Federal election by statute and it cannot be changed without an act of congress - a new law.

so Congress has the constitutional power to set the date, the date isn't set in the Constituion
17  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Re: should, could Sandy and its aftereffects change the election date? on: Oct 30, 2012, 03:43PM
well,

http://politicalticker.blogs.cnn.com/2012/10/30/virginia-adjusts-absentee-voting-due-to-storm/

VA is leaving it up to certain local counties for absentee voting changes

be interesting to see if they can and will do so
18  Practice Break / Purely Politics / should, could Sandy and its aftereffects change the election date? on: Oct 30, 2012, 02:45PM
according to the AP, the answer is not likely:

http://hosted2.ap.org/APDEFAULT/3d281c11a96b4ad082fe88aa0db04305/Article_2012-10-30-Postponing%20Elections-QandA/id-530729be74af43a9b4f123b1ceaf5f90

It's Congress's call, at least for the Federal Election apparantly

should the date be changed???

19  Practice Break / Purely Politics / Re: Romney Is The Worst President Ever on: Oct 26, 2012, 08:08AM
the us supremes decided the health care act was constitutional.

can other challenges be filed in the future, sure, but only time will tell if that will happen.

I'm not aware of any other current challenges working the way through the courts at this time.
