I ask everyone to notice that this mythical Titus person started this thread (and several others) and then bails.  This is classic internet troll behavior; in fact, I have my doubts as to his actual existence as a human being.  Ergo, I will have no problem banning his IP myself.

If you *are* real and are even following this thread anymore, here's some friendly advice: Find another forum on which to roost.  I've read all your posts now, and I can say without any regret that you are no longer welcome here.

I would love to do what you want, but I don't have the option to make a board "opt in".  If I could, I could make the default to hide PP and only when you join and ask to belong you will get PP.

I hope Richard is following this and can make the appropriate adjustment.

I am, and one of the new bits will be that new users will get a default set of boards, with the ability to add others upon reaching level 2 of membership.

Actually, I'm cooking soup. The eating is for this evening.

And server migration is complete.  Please post any problems here.

To address some of the issues (?) raised above, I quote...

Quote
TTF will migrate to a temporary server this weekend so the main server can be pulled from the rack for surgery.

This isn't the upgrade.  This is the bit where the server lives somewhere else while I execute the upgrades.  Perhaps some of you missed that.

Also, to further address some of the questions and suggestions regarding timing, profitability, and such, I recommend the following steps:

  • Google the following terms:  diverticulitis, peritonitis, sepsis, trauma surgery, necrotizing fasciitis, debridement, heart failure during surgery, transfusion, colostomy, ileostomy, ostomy takedown, incisional hernia, hernia repair, Strattice.  Keep track of your time!
  • Divide that number by the number of unscheduled hours of downtime the Forum has experienced in the last three years (by my count, that is 18, or 99.9135% uptime)
  • Jump that far up my ass.

That is all.

1)  TTF isn't a non-profit.  It's not a for-profit either, it just, well, is.

2)  The rather passive-aggressive shadowings that somehow this place is augmenting my personal wealth are bizarre.  I can't even respond.  It's not.

3)  Yes, I've had some serious health issues, thanks for your concern.  I am much better now.

4)  Don't worry about thanking me--having the site independent and user-operated was why I took it on eight years ago. (Yep, it's been that long.)  Thank the STAFF, who keep this place going, and pat yourselves on the back for using it.

5)  From this point forward, if anyone has a beef, would you please just email me about it?  Dropping by the site for a rare visit becomes a bit of a downer when I read some of the ridiculous assertions and unkind smarmy remarks.  As hard as it may be for some of you to believe, I have no masterful Machiavellian plans for the leverage of the Forum membership or funds to start a land war in south-central Asia.

Peace,

The upgrades are including both upgraded hardware AND software.

Yes, as BG mentioned, it's being tested.

Yes, money is being spent on the upgrade.

Yes, it will be happening as soon as possible.

Yes, I'm actively working on it.

10  Town Hall / Announcements / TTF upgrades: ways, means, scheduling on: Oct 02, 2011, 05:51AM
Work continues on the TTF upgrade, here's a bit of information on the scheduling and what's being done.  The entire system is being upgraded, not just the software.  A new server has been ordered and will be delivered within the fortnight which has over 4 times the available memory and diskspace, and the operating system and all underlying systems (database, PHP, the forum software, the classifieds software, etc.) are also all being upgraded.  As I have mentioned, this is LONG overdue.

As for scheduling: I am planning on this all being done before Thanksgiving; I was hoping for somewhat sooner, but as the requirements I gave to the manufacturer for the server specs caused a delay, and I'm due for another fairly major surgery in the middle of October, so prior to that is impossible; there will also be a recovery period involved.  I've learned that doing work as the root user on a Unix system while jacked on hydrocodone is a big no-no.

As items on the to-do list are completed, I'll post updates here.

And FYI, "Mr. Byrd" has been hospitalized as many months as not in the last two years, with 8 major surgeries literally under my belt now, so I haven't had the time to execute the needed upgrades.  Thanks for asking.

The poor, beleaguered classifieds area has needed a deeply profound upgrade for over 2 years.  It would appear the time is now.

(Thanks, guys)

Some upgrading in process this morning--shouldn't affect anything other than server response time, but I've been wrong before...   :/
14  Town Hall / Announcements / Upcoming server upgrades == occasional downtime on: Aug 07, 2011, 03:51PM
Over the next two weeks, the server on which tromboneforum.org lives will be undergoing so long-overdue maintenance, primarily in the area of upgrading PHP and its associated modules and plugins.  This being the case, there may be times where the Forum behaves...unexpectedly.  Bear with me and I'll get us all shipshape as fast as I am able.

16  Town Hall / Announcements / Forum downtime, 17 March 2011 on: Mar 17, 2011, 12:14PM
The colocation facility where TTF is located experienced a BGP circuit failover issue at 11:18 CDT today which has now been resolved.  Call it 3 hours of outage.  In any case, we're back.
17  Town Hall / Announcements / Forum downtime, 2 March 2011 on: Mar 02, 2011, 04:38PM
A column mysteriously disappeared from one of our database tables this morning.  It has been repaired, and I am investigating in a decidedly annoyed manner.  (backups aren't just a good idea, they're the law)

Apologies for the downtime; we're back now.

18  Town Hall / Comments and Suggestions / When is the next TTF upgrade? on: Dec 16, 2009, 06:49AM
Many of you have expressed an interest in when new features/bugfixes will be applied to the Forum.  I am waiting for the final release of SimpleMachines Forum 2.0 (the base engine on which our site operates).  SMF 2.0 Release Candidate 2 Public was released in early November, and the General Availability release is around the corner, most likely in January 2010.  At that point, I will address some of the annoying bits of the Forum as well as adding some new features and retrofitting our customized addons to the new codebase.  There will be a number of other changes to the site as well at that time.

So, short version:  In the offing, but not until January at the earliest.

Cheers,

Dusty, are you in Germany?

Also, all:  When you post your IP, please also add where you are geographically located.  Thanks.
