Yet, while you guys are marching what you think is a victory march, CNN didn't identify the actual person who created the meme. LOL!

How funny is that? Another FAKE NEWS by CNN.

CNN stands by its rights to not ID anonymous sources when trying to hurt Trump, but threatens to ID a wrongfully accused anonymous source for a meme negative to CNN.

What's the harm you say? No money involved, so it's not blackmail, but by ID'ng an anonymous source could threaten this person's life. CNN doesn't care and neither do most of you guys.

Go ahead and defend this behavior if you want to. It's obvious to everyone that CNN is not a news organization anymore. It can be categorized with the comedy channel. LOL!

Wait, what? Since they didn't publicly name the a--hole, he doesn't exist and the story is fake news? Are you sniffing sudafed over there?

And if posting such racist bigoted rants would threaten his life if his name was found out... well, he's an adult man. Maybe he shouldn't be doing that? Or at least be prepared for the consequences. You know.... like the republicans advocate, take personal responsibility for his posts and actions.

I still wonder about the POTUS dredging the scum of the internet to find things he finds amusing, and then sharing them openly on his own account...

"So CNN did what any respectable journalistic outlet would do, basically blackmailed him(the person who created the wrestler meme). Of course Kaczynski said he wasn’t blackmailing, but the line “CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change,” seemed an awful lot like something Michael Corleone would make in an offer someone couldn’t refuse."

Of course, this standard is a 'new' issue. (For lefty newsites maybe)

Yeah, CNN 'hopes' they don't have to release any names. The guy who posted it better hope there are no records of his conversations. /s

I don't like CNN's response, but the Michael Corleone-esque threats were absolutely started by the President - 'Kick them out, I'll defend you in court' 'Comey better hope there are no tapes' 'I hope you can let this go'

You Guys just don't understand.

All that stuff you just said ... no go.

It doesn't affirm the existing views, so it's false.

That's the standard in play here--the only actual standard.

Trolls should be outed.  It's the only way to keep them at bay.

Wow, you're just not getting it. Journalists have been using unnamed sources ever since there was journalism. We probably wouldn't ever have ANY revelations in the press without them. Nixon probably never would have gotten caught without unnamed sources.

These sources are known to the reporter, but the reporter agrees not to reveal the name of the source in exchange for getting the information. This is nothing at all like Han....solo. He is an internet troll who posted racist remarks. You have no legal right to privacy when you make comments in public forums. It is not illegal to discover the name of a person who posts public comments. CNN had no agreement with him to withhold his identity. He did not provide any information to CNN. CNN simply said they would not publish his name at this time because he apologized for his behavior and asked that his name not be revealed. That's more than he deserves in my opinion, but that's the decision the reporter made. CNN has no legal obligation to keep that persons' name confidential.

I don't know how you can mix up two situations that are so obviously dissimilar.

And as for this supposed duty you think the press has to not reveal the names of people who do bad things, because they might get death threats... well that's just silly. Newspapers publish the names of criminals and people who do embarrassing things in public ALL THE TIME. CNN didn't invent that. And stop calling this guy an "anonymous source", because he is not.

They threatened and intimidated him hoping to cause him to change his behavior, which incidentally is protected free speech. They are not the law. Well, CNN got caught and all this is just taking them down as a credible news source. Actually, they have been outed for the party hacks that they are.

Good riddance!

What a load of hooey. He deserves to be outed. Don't say stupid stuff if you don't want it tied to your name. It is only intimidating because he knows how bad it was. Shows about 25x the self awareness that you do.

Goodness! So then the CNN reporter has been arrested for blackmail, I take it. Oh wait, no he wasn't. Know why? Because he didn't blackmail anyone. CNN has the right to say the troll's real name if they want to; that is ALSO protected speech. You see, free speech doesn't just apply to racist right wing blowhards, it applies to everyone. CNN didn't "get caught", because they haven't done anything illegal.

You're obviously trying to advance a narrative about this that you got from some silly right wing blog. Problem is that it's nonsense.

People are regularly 'outed' as the source of racist comments. There's nothing wrong with it, and if it's illegal, show me the law.

Sometimes they turn out to work for the public, or work in a position where their comments are deleterious to their company, and they lose their job. The solution to this is to not say things you're ashamed of.

OK, it's CNN's free speech to expose him. Donald Trump made him news, made him important. CNN has a right to report news.

And although, it's been noted already, "right to free speech" isn't a right to anonymity. It just isn't. If you do stupid things in public you have to accept that the public may know.

It's like your posts here. You have no right to demand no one talk about them. You'd be laughed out of court if you tried to stop them.

I suspect CNN will be in business long after Trump is not.

Yes! people are outed all the time. CNN didn't out this guy though. Did they? No.

They threatened him(I call it blackmail). And, as it turns out, it was the wrong guy. They just found some jerk who was posting vile stuff and claimed he was the one who did the meme.

If you're so worried about fake news, why didn't it bother you that Hannity continued flogging the Seth Rich conspiracy tale long after it was shown to be a hoax?

Or that the President himself repeated Judge Nap's tall tale that British intelligence wiretapped Trump?

You're trying to make a big deal out of this, and it's not. The writer was simply saying he had not promised the man anonymity. Your habit of adding little 'facts', like saying they threatened him, or that he's 15 years old, simply reflects that you'll say anything to make the story better. Kinda like Trump.

You're trying mighty hard to turn this into something.

Not at all the case.

"Blackmail" is a label one can use to feel validated in certain unreasonable beliefs.

So "outing" someone is a terrible thing to do, and we're all heartless and insensitive for not decrying it? But let me guess: if Trump does it to hundreds of voters, you're OK with it, right?
