I recall someone posting a couple of months ago (right around the Alan Gilbert farewell concert) about having not seen Phil Myers performing with the NYP in some time.  I noticed that as well, even with Das Rheingold requiring extra players.

I was on the NYP website earlier today and see they've posted a preliminary announcement of auditions for Principal Horn, with information about application and repertoire to follow in late September.

I guess a retirement is in the offing?
