Apparently it was the Board Moderator.  Ask him.  It wasn't me, and it wasn't blast by accident.

Who locked the "Age of the Universe" thread, and why?

There's a bias problem in this regard with these kinds of topics.

Overall the usual level of bias in this context is exceptionally well minimized--it's really quite impressive--but it falters under some of the subjects that thread raises.

The fact that even in this kind of situation it's generally corrected given some time is all the more impressive.

So give it a bit of time ... the real problem here is likely to be "naturally" resolved.

There may be a perfectly rational explanation, probably a mistake even.

If not, it was a pretty weak-ass move. The kind of attitude that results in teaching creationism in schools...

Yeah, there's a precedent for that too ...

Even trombonist moderators have made a mistake or two over the history of the Interweb.

At least that's what I've heard--may have been a trumpet player who said it though.

As I said before, it wasn't me that closed the thread.  I think Billy may have felt the discussion had become a bit contentious.  But I hope he will speak for himself.

I sent Billy a note this morning asking why.

I did not think the level of contention was getting too much, but even if it was, is it not usual to warn before locking?

Well, if contentious debates about the merits of science in determining things like "The age of the universe" is an acceptable reason to shut down a thread, I'm going to go get on the Soviet Trombone Forum.

In soviet russia, religion debates you!

As I said before, it wasn't me that closed the thread.  I think Billy may have felt the discussion had become a bit contentious.  But I hope he will speak for himself.

We know Bruce, no one's blaming you. We know you as a rational, reasonable person who isn't likely to get offended by having your world view challenged.

I did as well. I've seen far more "contentious debate" on this forum over bell materials than what was present in that thread.

I recommend we avoid wasting energy spinning our wheels in the absence of any information--tends to create bias feedback that doesn't help anyone actually figure anything out, and before long the villagers are amassing around the weird dude's house with torches and pitchforks.

Let's stick with the benefit of doubt, or arguably better just the acceptance of the unknown, until/unless we have a reasonable basis for thinking other things ... which likely won't develop, which will be good.

Of course that's just my recommendation, for whatever it's worth.

I agree, he deserves the benefit of the doubt. I'm just particularly sensitive about stifling debate at the moment... it's probably just an honest mistake, or there was good reason. Anyhoo...

Google translate translates: "It is said that chickens are milked"

Google images explains:

And its one of the best comebacks I've read on the forum.  Good!

I think dealing with DD is more like - Как об сте́нку горо́х

But pigs flying?  Would that  be more like goat's eating wolves?

Well, I like to identify with Joshua... if trumpets can bring walls down why not words?

Am I supposed to be able to read that?

I've heard they milk chickens... roughly translates to "don't believe everything you hear" or "don't believe rumors."

But peas?  You can throe all the peas you like a walls, and they won't come down.

I like Russian sayings.  They come from a unique perspective.

Age of Universe thread was locked by mistake.  I have been out of town for a few days (Step-daughter had major surgery.)  It is unlocked now.
