This is a new game, somewhat related to the earlier ones. The person whose post number is directly in the middle of the number of posts (say the 20th post in 40 posts) is the winner. This may seem hard at first glance, which is why I chose it. However, I have kept it to my heart that trombone players are smart at things besides our instruments, unlike so many of my friends tell me. Evil

Well, you are first and right now I am last.  Nobody is winning.  With the next post I am winning.  But after that, Katy Bar the Doors!

Okay, now wait a minute.  I need to figure this out.  For someone to have the post that is actually the MIDDLE post, there has to be an odd number of total posts, correct?  So, for instance, if someone's post is number 9, that makes the person whose post was number 5 the winner because there are now four posts on either side of post number 5.

Or, in the case above, there were 7 posts, so the person with post #4 would have been the winner at that point.

Right?

So this post, number 10, leaves us with no winner unless there's a person at number 5.5 since that's the official midway point of ten posts.

Or am I splitting hairs (or posts) here?  ;-)

Actually, the numbers are replies, so you have to add 1 (original post) to the total.  Reply 10 (Post 11) does make a winner, while Reply 11 (Post 12) does not.

My head hurts. ;-)

Winner=Author of reply (((Replies+1)/2)+0.5) | ((Replies+1)/2) ends in 0.5

Note that an odd numbered reply results in a value that has .5, and hence is a whole number.  The vertical bar can be interpreted as "Given".  An even numbered post has no midpoint (odd-numbered reply)

<Edit: found logical error and fixed it.  Only an odd number of posts can have a middle.>

Let's see...

Gemma is Post #18 (Reply 17).  To make her the winner, we need 17 more posts.  I'm the first.

Incidentally, I just made Jim Archer (Reply 9) the winner!  Congratulations, Jim!

I'm posting with the thought that this is sorta like buying a lottery ticket - in the end there's little chance of winning and it's a matter of chance, but if you don't post, you can't win.

You could make that part of the game and we track the progress with our postings...

Your post [#23] placed Bruce square (X*X) at the mid-point; thus he is first.

My initial post [#19] still waits for futher posts to occur so I wait to be first.

However, this post [#24] establishes the dreaded even entry and thus there is no current "winner".

Actually, your post, Reply #24, makes the total post count 25 so post 13 (Reply 12) is the winner.

Now I have made the total post count 26 and nobody is the winner.

Indeed you are correct. I failed in the obvious!

This being reply #26 for a total of 27 posts puts reply #13 in the middle position and
none other than the original poster now holds the winning spot.

The Secret Formula (you knew there had to be one, didn't you?) is:

Reply#/2+1 | Reply#/2 is a whole number (the | is notation meaning "given").

So this is Reply 30, and the winning number is (drumroll, please!)

16! (Reply 15)

It's ME!  Thank you, thank you. ;-)

Well, after having taken an awful lot of math courses in college, and learning statistics to deal with Quality Control, I think I know a fair bit of mathematics.  Many of us technical types have to.

It's funny that due to a quirk in the numbering system, it's easy to find the Middle Poster.  We number the REPLIES (original post has no number), so if the Replies number is even, dividing that by 2 gives the Reply number of the Middle Poster.

Which is now Reply 29, whomever that is.

I decide to post without seeing if this made anyone a winner or not, just because my brain's too tired from rehearsal to think straight.  But based on the fact that the last post made Bruce a winner, then this one makes no one a winner.

I think....  :/

There must be something in set theory that proves no one can win this.  The proof is trivial for 50% of all cases, the other 50% are a little tougher.

In order for there to be a middle person, there must be an odd number of posts.  Note that the original post does not have a number, but each subsequent post gets a "reply number".

So the "middle person" is the response number of the last response divided by two plus one (for the initial post).  An odd response number cannot have a middle person; there are actually two.

This post is odd, so there is no "winner".  BillO's response was 114.  Half is 57 plus one means post 58 was the winner.  Egad!  Me again! Eeek!

Bruce, if you just arrange to be the odd poster each time you have this wrapped up!

You just made it jctb1337.  Now I made it nobody.

Next post gives the honor to Post 60 (whomever that is).

All I have to do is post twice and I'll be the winner for the even posts as well. Aha!
