Finished up a music ed degree at Michigan State last spring, and I could be teaching your children in the very near future  :-0
I'll bring him in and lock the doors!  ;-)

Nice to see you again, Joe! Best of luck in landing in a good place and congratulations on earning your degree!  Good!

Go easy on the vodka, son--pretty soon you'll be using Leonardo Da Vinci paintings for your avatar.  :/

Hello,

I have lingered around here for over a year now and never got off my ass to say hello.

My name is Scott "Rev" Wrona from just outside good ol Detroit Michigan. In 2007 I formed a jazz band and from 2007-2009 I lead it as their drummer and manager.  In 2009 my carpal tunnel was getting rather bad in my wrist so I had to finally give up playing the drums.   I love playing music so I decided to go back to something I dabbled in back in grade school and an instrument my band didn't have...the trombone.

Since Nov. of 09 I have been working my ass of on the trombone getting back in to the grove and trying to keep up with my band mates.  Fortunately I all ready knew the songs, my music theory and all the jazz (haha pun).  I still knew my slide positioning with a little reminder and just been working on my endurance and embouchure.

There ya go thats me and my trombone in a nutshell.

Glad to have you posting!  Thankfully the carpal tunnel hasn't hit me or I'd have to get rid of my drum set too.  But I was doing trombone for a while before I took up drums.  Either you have your photo flipped horizontally or you play left-handed.  You have some good company in that department.  I've played straight tenor left-handed some and it's fun, but that doesn't work very well with valves.  I mostly play right-handed.

My mother was born and raised down the road a ways in Jackson.  Had a sister-in-law and brother-in-law-in-law (?) who lived just outside Detroit.  Don't remember which suburb, but I believe it was a two-word name.

I am not going anywhere, I plan on playing for a good ol long time.   The carpal tunnel was hitting my thumbs the worse.  I remember working on my moeller method and the pain just kicked in like a jack hammer. I don't have too much of a problem playing.  I hope you never go through with carpal tunnel, it isn't fun.
You are correct with the photo, I do play the trombone as a lefty.  It was funny, the first time I set up the horn in front of my 1st teacher he looked at me funny and asked if I knew what I was doing.
Been to Jackson, as for the two word city, it could be just about anything.

I will be here for a long time, I have found some VERY useful information here.

I decided to go look at a map to see if anything rang a bell.  It wasn't a two-word town, it was Warren.

I have a few friends with carpal tunnel.  A couple of them - both clarinet players - ended up having surgery on both and it seems to have helped them a lot.  The pain was gone and they're back playing their clarinets.  Unfortunately they're probably beyond trying to convert them to trombone.

welcome to the forums, look around, see what trips your trigger and join us in any and all sections.   some get a little intense and don't have a lot to do with trombones - "purely politics", some are just for fun and games and some are to help you be the best you can be

so enjoy and don't be shy

Ladies and Gentlemen of The Trombone Forum, it's nice to meet you.  My name is John Lugo, also known as MuscleMouth.  I have over 25 years of playing experience and over 15 years of professional stage experience.  I currently perform with 5 bands in Los Angeles on a regular basis and am a professional studio trombonist.  I've been to The Trombone Forum several times for research purposes, but have never sat down and become a part of it.  Now that I've been self employed with my trombone for several years I feel I can contribute, as well as learn.  I hold a BM in Composition and Theory from The University of Texas at San Antonio, and graduated Cum Laude in 2004.  Though I was not a Performance major, I was Principal in the UTSA Orchestra and Lead in the UTSA Jazz Ensemble due to my prior stage experience and knowledge of the instrument.  I won the San Antonio (SA) News 'Horn Player of the Year' award for 1994, ten years before I graduated from music school.  I'm thankful for UTSA, I went to a good school and got a great education, even if our mascot is a road runner.  I hit the ground running when I got to LA a couple of years ago and haven't had much chance to rest since.  I'm the proud owner of a 1942 Conn 24H, which I personally consider to be the most well made trombone ever, and I play it with a big Schilke 51D mouthpiece.  It opens up the low end and makes the high notes sing.  I'm a composer and arranger, as well as a lover of funk music.  With all of these combinations of experiences in the 2 years I've been in LA I've worked with members of Fishbone, met Sly Stone, worked with members of Parliament/Funkadelic and The Red Hot Chili Peppers, been in music videos with Mary J. Blige and Robi Draco Rosa, and led a horn section on the Vans Warped Tour performing my arrangements.  I could go on and on, but I'm too busy going on and on.  I am a solo artist under the name MuscleMouth and a composer in the classical sense under the name John A. Lugo II.  My music is on E-TIP Records.  I also give trombone, theory and composition lessons, have a beautiful wife named Sandra, and two beautiful daughters named Elizabeth and Samantha.

New to the site and was looking for any postings on Buddy Morrow. Jamie Parker's was good. "Bend it to your will" Have been reminicising on my days on the Iron Lung with Buddy, Leif, Dennis T. (all the guys from Buffalo), Lyn, TK, Kevin, and the guys back when we earned a whopping $250.00/wk. Maybe I'll dig out my cassette's "Live on the Iron Lung" with some good stories on Buddy's years with his own band. Rick Mizell

 Hi

Also brand new to the forums...and semi-new to the instrument.  I'm originally a flute player but I can't really call myself a true convert or claim to "have seen the light" as I've been utterly fascinated by the trombone since I was little and I've always wanted to play it.  Unfortunately I severely misinterpreted some messages I received in my childhood (like being told I couldn't join the Boy Scouts  :-P) and decided for myself that I should probably choose a more "feminine" instrument to commit to or risk getting shot down again.

Sad right?  I don't feel bitter about it but I'd be lying if I said I've never regretted it.  I did have the opportunity to play 3rd trombone in jazz band.  I was hit with the double whammy of learning slide positions and bass clef at once and I wrote numbers over everything.  But other than my illiteracy I actually didn't stink that badly and I definitely saw myself coming back to this instrument some time in the future.  I'm better at reading bass clef now thanks to a general music minor in college and dabbling with electric bass (I think I'm rebelling against my soprano past).  But getting my own instrument wasn't in the picture....until now.

I got a great deal on a lightly used Jupiter JSL-538.  I've been wanting a 'bone of my own since I was 8 and this is all feeling very surreal right now.  I am very much looking forward to developing our new friendship.

Other than that I am 26.  I am married to very supportive and musically talented man.  We do not have children...yet.  In addition to flute and bass, I can also play a variety of folk flutes and whistles and a little ukulele.

I have been posting for a week or so, but I should introduce myself.

My name is Skyler X, and I have been playing trombone since about the middle of sixth grade. I take lessons, and am pretty good at classical and jazz. I am currently in the San Diego Youth Symphony Jazz band, playing as second chair last year.

I'm too young for job offers, save them for people who can use them.  :)

Hello everyone. From my original post on Sept. 30th I have read several post on various subjects and picked up a few tips. I have done a few warm-ups and a little scale work and things feel satisfactory at this point. My main problem is getting into an established routine, a lot of which is just other things going on.
I did pick up a KORG TM - 40( from suggestions on this site ) last week from Amazon and the price could not be beat and it will most likely be a good tool.
I opted to start out on my 2B instead of the 3B, just for the lack of lung capacity having not played for so long. Does one think that is a good idea or not?
Anyway, I will continue to look around on the site, when time allows, and try to get some pointers. I have used the search function, but I am sure there are things missed.
The Purely Politics section in Chit-Chat appears quite lively at times. I am afraid there is already one strike against me being a Texan. I definitely have thoughts on matters, but will have to decide on entry into that realm.
Thanks for the information provided through the post.

Thanks for the Welcome, RHM.
Quite the interesting and hypnotic video. Could it be that the inspiration for such comes from partaking in a particular type of Mushroom?…just asking. :)

Hi all!

I'm brand new to the forum as of a couple days ago.  My name's Marty, and I live in Oshkosh, WI.  I'm a fourth year student at the University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh where I study bass trombone performance.  I own a Getzen 1062 with a rose brass bell, but I play on the school's Benge 290 for the most part.  :D  After graduation I plan to go to school for band instrument repair in Red Wing, MN.

Welcome, and good luck!

How are those Getzen slides? I'm considering a Getzen trigger sometime along the line as an upgrade to my Yamaha.

While I'm here, how good are the Getzen thayers?
Anybody?
