I love Andy Hunter, this past winter break I really got into his first "Spoke" CD.

He just came out with a new one, too.

About a year ago I caught the Mingus band on their regular Monday night gig at The Jazz Standard, and Andy was with Frank Lacy and Dave Taylor in the bone section.  It was a beautiful night!  I'm glad to hear of more work of his under his own name, as he's one of the freshest and most original players I've heard in some time.

Thanks,

I got to know Andy somewhat when living in Cleveland, nice guy, and fluent in Mandarin!

He used to play a Thein, and sounded great on it, he'd sound good on anything.  I get such a kick out of how cliche-free his playing is, doesn't seem to have a "coasting" gene...

He isn't hugging the mic for a lot of this. At about 3:53 he gets completely off the mic and it still sounds fat.  He does lean in for the first partial at one point and it's not really pretty.

Whatever. That's all nit picking and Andy is clearly killing it. What a sound! And check out how relaxed his chops are through those (quick) interval leaps. He is someone I've not met, but who pops up in conversation every now and then. He is highly regarded and deservedly so.

I was lucky enough to sit next to Andy at a rehearsal a few weeks ago.  He's definitely not a close-mic player.

I've heard him peel the paint off walls, with a good sound.  This guy's not limited technically or stylistically, believe me.

I never said he was limited in any way, he's just too close to the mike on this occasion, for my taste. There, was that PC enough........... :/

At first I thought he was actually the tenor player from this clip.
