Very cool Good!

Look forward to the hatching. I like the addition of the tracker map showing the travels of the bird.

Weird.

Earlier this morning, I checked on the nest and thought I'd closed that site down. Now, however, although I can't see anything, I can still hear the wind blowing over the microphone and assorted cheeping noises. This is annoying when I'm trying to listen to Mnozil Brass! OK, my little friends, love you, but please GO AWAY!

I followed a link to watch the first flights of the young we enjoyed watching last season. They have a number of different videos posted from this nest on youtube. One of the videos was the defense of the nest against an owl attack!  :-0 Ma and Pa eagle don't play when it comes to the rearing of their young!

Rumor has it that Ben Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird because turkeys taste better than eagles.

Two out now!

I watched them for a while yesterday. A bit of inefficiency on the part of the parents. I don't know which is which, but he/she/they spent all day sitting on an empty eggshell (I thought they were supposed to tidy these up?!) and the attempt at feeding didn't go too well. Never mind, I expect they'll get better at it!

It's a nasty old morning there today. Just 43 deg F and peeing it down. Ugh. Not nice conditions for number 3 to emerge into.

Looking at the nest I see that they did a fine job of
preparing it for the new season. By the time this new bunch
takes wing it will be beaten down and have a very lived
in appearance.

Each year we get to watch a pair of Osprey rebuild their nest at the local wetland along the Columbia River, and raise a brood. It's amazing to see them soar through the trees and WHAM! snag a 6-foot branch, and return to the nest where they place it carefully with the other sticks to build what looks rickety but stays in place through high winds. They always build in the same tree, about 35 feet up, and we get to see heads of younguns bobbing up (the trail wanders right under the tree), but no clear picture like the Eagle cam.

The eaglets are too large to fit under M/D anymore so they are always visible :)

I keep the site up at work. Sitting in an office with a view of the stairwell, tonking away at editing some stodgy scientific paper, it's nice to have a little window on the outside world and to hear the sounds of nature. It's easy enough to tell when something is happening by the increase in noise, so I can click on them to see what's up. Mind you, I have a number of puzzled colleagues wondering where all that cheeping is coming from.... :)

Scrolling through Facebook yesterday, I read a post from the Raptor Resource saying that the other bald eagle "video" nest has lost all its chicks.

"We are sorry to announce that the Fort St. Vrain eagle nest in Colorado has failed. A violent storm soaked the nest and remaining two young, who died of cold. This is the second time this has happened at this nest, which is in a remote and hard to reach area."

I know it's all part of Nature and it can't be helped and these things happen, etc etc, but I'd be darned upset if it happened to OUR babies, particularly if I was watching. :(

(They all look fine this morning, with THREE fish lined up and waiting to be eaten. :))

Hearing of the failed nest brings a sense of melancholy.
Watching our nest this morning it is apparent that
these three little ones enjoyed the fish you saw earlier.
The away parent flew in with a new fish and the eaglets just yawned!
They were busy with self preening and just being relaxed. My wife and I noted how the storms that blew through the area had the wind blowing fiercely. The tree is moving about in large sways and the feathers of the parent are being laid back against the grain. The reaction of the entire bunch is complete acceptance and to just continue to relax. Good attitudes..

I've often regarded Dad as being a bit thick, but this video is a great example of co-operation, with both Dad and Mum sheltering the chicks from some truly horrible weather.
