A friend who plays trumpet  in a swing band with me remarked recently that
a shallow mouthpiece increased his high range. What are the effects
of a shallow mouthpiece on the trombone
as far as range and tone?
What tbone mouthpieces are consided "shallow"?
Thanks for you answer.

I generally think if a mouthpiece is shallower than it is wide it is a shallow mouthpiece. The cup shape is usually very... well... cup-shaped, opposed to funnel or "V" shaped. A shallow mouthpiece has never improved my high range, just made it clearer and maybe was easier. If you can get your hands on one that's similar to the rim size you play on now you can find what it does for you. What are you playing on?

Well I learned something today, I use a shallow mouthpiece.
A Bach 12C and a Bach copy 7C. The 7C cup is 1" wide and 3/4" deep.
Thank you

Go to the Bach mouthpiece site, do a little reading and some of the mysteries of mouthpieces will be revealed.

In the Bach line the "C" after the size number indicates a shallow cup. There are 12's and 7's and several other numbers with no "C". These are deeper.

However, once you get to 6-1/2AL the system changes.

Have fun!

I used to play a Schilke 45B, which has a very shallow cup. In the short term I got a better high register, but after a while, I didn't like the tone I was getting. Ive recently switched to a 7C and I'm getting a much better tone and am hitting the same range. Its all in trial and error.
