If anyone can help me out, I have been trying to upload a new profile picture (done it already like 3 or 4 times) but my original picture stays and my new picture is not available. Can someone help me with that? Thanks!

Try uploading your new picture to your Gallery.  You may find that the new picture doesn't meet the pixel limits for posting.  If it is too large you can use any of a number of apps to reduce its size.  Even Paintbrush will work.

Once it is in your Gallery you should be able to select it as your picture (that's what I did).

I believe there's a quiet limit on image dimensions.  When the same thing happened to me, I scaled the image down a bit and it worked fine.

I've had success with this also.

In the red bar near the top, in the "Goodies" drop-down menu click on "Gallery"

then "My Images"

then "add a picture"

Did you get some kind of error message?

Normally I'll see something like "maximum size 640 x 480 pixels - your image is 1024 x 768".

Can you view the file you are trying to upload using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer?

I already got the error message and I reduced the size already of the photo to be within the appropriate dimensions. I already uploaded to the gallery and then copied the url into the one box where it says member photo. But still no luck.

What kind of file was it?  Your gallery shows a "default" image which means the file can't be displayed.  Also, no file information was given.

Note that the only file forms I know that work for images are BMP (Bitmap) and JPG (JPeg).  I never tried loading up a GIF or TIFF file.

Give us a little more information about what is going on.  Also, feel free to contact me and I'll see if I can load the file for you.

It is a jpeg. The photo is already in the gallery but I can't get it to be my profile picture.

Is it the one on your Web site with you leaning against a wall holding a small bore King?  Because the other picture from your Web site used  to be your avatar.

Yes, sir. It sure is. I see that it is as a member photo, but can't seem to get it to be my profile picture, still.

That's odd.

I can force your profile to select your picture as an avatar, but when I try to finalize it it's gone.

I may try a few variations on your image and see if something works better.  But not on this laptop; no software is installed.  If I have any success I'll tell you what I did.

Wow.  Now it's there.  But it's distorted.  I may do some transformations.  Would you be upset if I cropped the image?

Go ahead. But this is weird, the picture finally came up as my avatar (profile picture) but the dimensions are off.

The original picture is:

Filesize: 453.93kb
Height: 950 Width: 633

But the avatar is loaded as 100x100.

I don't know enough to fix it but I'll take a look.   I think it needs to be lower resolution and smaller specified dimensions.

I tried changing the avatar picture from 150 x 100 to 150 x 80 figuring it would force leaving some area to the right (or left), but for some reason the changes I tried to insert were not accepted.  And the element shows as 150 x 100 inspecting the html for the element.

I don't know enough about how this board treats images to really understand what is wrong either.

How's this?  25% of the original.

I'm not able to change your profile picture, but you can download that and then upload it to your avatar.

Actually, what if I upload the smaller photo to the gallery and then try it from there?

Try this one:
I think you can upload directly.  This one is definitely small enough.  (I think)

Doug, you didn't go far enough.  We had to get the maximum dimension to 100 pixels or less.

I actually reduced your image to 40% so it's something like 95 pixels high.  This seemed to work.

Enjoy, Christian.

Avatar pictures have to be pretty small, and nothing tells you how small.

It appears that the maximum dimension can't exceed 100 pixels.  It seems all the "canned" avatars also are 100 x 100 pixels or smaller.

I thought that we automatically resized imaages to meet this requirement, but I guess we don't.

I think that is why I was having trouble uploading an avatar because I didn't know that you have to have the photo at certain size. Maybe (as suggestion) the forum should put that info next to the "Upload a photo" section.

I agree.  I hope RLB will see this thread and make changes to the new system.  I can't make changes to what we have now.

<Edit>

I went over to what controls we have over avatars.
Maximum avatar size is 100 x 100 pixels
We have an option selected which says if avatar is too large, let HTML resize it.  Maybe HTML doesn't care about maintaining proportions because it took Christian's initial image and made a nonlinear resizing.
