You must go to Toto Ramen in Hell's Kitchen.  Get there before 5pm, put your name on the list, and come back when they open.

Best ramen in the city.

The Carnegie Deli on 7th Avenue near 57th Street has great delicatessen food.  Sandwiches named for famous stars (and they are not kosher).

Lower East Side: Yonah Shimmel's Knishes.

There are two jazz scenes: one uptown around 52nd street and Broadway and the other in Greenwich Village.

If you see a big cube balanced on its corner in the middle of a traffic island, you are right next to my alma mater, Cooper Union.  You can turn the cube (really!).  It's called "The Alamo" for reasons I'll never understand.

My own favorite.

Small.

Inexpensive.

Unassuming.

It doesn't even have a sign. Maybe 8 seats.

And truly brilliant. Middle Eastern food, but up several notches.

Azuri

465 West 51st St, just west of 10th Ave.

Sunday-Thursday 10:30AM-9:00PM

Friday 10:30-4pm sundown

What the owner has to say:

Quote

A small place but with a big heart

Once you tested the food it will linger in your mind

I am proud to say that I am not authentic, but I am original .

I say so because I believe that the second generation should be

better then the first.

What I believe in fusion. Adding the goodness such as ginger, flax seed,

soy, oats, and the abundance of herbs and spices of other nation infused

with the flavor of Middl Eastern cuisine

I nominated Azuri to become a servant  to the community, by showing

care and hoping that you will notice my intent.

Why Should You Eat at Azuri Food?

To eat Azuri Food is like reaching the Promise Land

Azuri's substitution for fat is fruit

I sell Kosher food for the price of non Kosher

We are generous and inexpensive

What does Kosher Means?

It means to embrace all the conditions and ceremonial behavior

You don't need to be Jewish to eat Kosher food

To eat Kosher food is to know that your food is sealed with the

reputation of trust

Know that a man's wealth comes from his good reputation

Kosher is a peace of mind

you are what you eat

Kosher and spirit= #1 which is AZURI

Try us, you'll love AZURI

We prepare everything on the premises and we try hard to deliver to you

Wounderful heavenly food

If you can't go to ISRAEL come to AZURI CAFE

WHERE THE HEART OF ISRAEL IS

A place you want to call home

Get the combination salad platter. A little of everything this man does best. Quite amazing, for the price.

Bet on it.

Pizza recommendation...get a slice of white pizza at Carve at 47th & 8th. Dear God, i just drooled all over my iPhone while typing that. Haha. Add a salad if you like. They'll make it for you with lots of salad bar items to choose from. A friendly neighborhood place that feels like NY to me. And a block away on the corner of 48th & 8th is a little corner market with a deli counter inside. Get a turkey bacon BLT panini sandwich (with or without cheese) to go. Ask for double turkey bacon...just a darned fine sandwich. Add a bag of PennyStick pretzels and your favorite drink. Enjoy New York.

See -- this is the kind of place I would be looking for: honest, real, mom/pop humble joint with great food.

No TGI-McFunster chains.

Go get the real deal.

And maybe a dirty-water dog or two.

If you see a place, whether it be a hole-in-the-wall or an icon like Peter Luger's, and you've never seen it duplicated in your hometown? Give it a shot. Chances are it will make you happy. And most likely you'll never forget the experience!

The Stand was one of my favorite haunts when I was in High School and College.  One of the best collections of used books anywhere!

While you were at MacDougal Street did you go into any of the clubs there?

hi BG,

I had an appointment on MacDougal so no time to
go any music shop or jazz club.
but I found that there is a nice place and want to go for free walk again.

You are welcome. The owner is a nice man if you are nice to him. Not so nice to some others. I've seen it. Welcome to NYC. How long are you staying?

Too bad...I am playing with a good band this Tuesday at the Zinc Bar...Eddie Allen's group. I didn't know that you were here...Tuesday last (Oct 21) I played a celebration of Dizzy Gillespie's birthday at the Baha'i Center.

Have fun...
