Mueller Has Early Draft of Trump Letter Giving Reasons for Firing Comey

Since Mueller hasn't subpoenaed the White House for this, it means some helpful person volunteered it to him.

Quote
The special counsel, Robert S. Mueller III, has obtained a letter drafted by President Trump and a top political aide that offered an unvarnished view of Mr. Trump’s thinking in the days before the president fired the F.B.I. director, James B. Comey.

The circumstances and reasons for the firing are believed to be a significant element of Mr. Mueller’s investigation, which includes whether Mr. Trump obstructed justice by firing Mr. Comey.

The letter, drafted in May, was met with opposition from Donald F. McGahn II, the White House counsel, who believed that its angry, meandering tone was problematic, according to interviews with a dozen administration officials and others briefed on the matter...

Quote
Mr. Trump ordered Mr. Miller to draft a letter, and dictated his unfettered thoughts. Several people who saw Mr. Miller’s multi-page draft described it as a “screed.”

That would be Stephen "the President will not be questioned" Miller

You know exactly why though. I realize this is kinda the criticism, but the man's doing his job as best he can with what he's got to work with.

Anyone even quarter arsed at the job of legal defense (or any defense that's intellectual rather than physical in nature) would have to be keenly aware that the first threat the cartoon president needs protection from is himself. He's proven he's the biggest threat he faces both consistently and persistently. It's obvious to most if not all who have the powers of observation of at least your average 10 year old (well ... your average 10 year old not raised too heavily influenced by Deplorables and/or other authoritarian types anyway).

I think discretion and good sense are not a continuing upward curve for most people.

It's low at 10, peaks around 50 or 60, and then there's a decline, sometimes back down to that 10 year old level.

From the Yesterday's News desk...

Remember when Trump said Obama had wiretapped the Trump Tower?

How low has President Obama gone to tapp my phones during the very sacred election process. This is Nixon/Watergate. Bad (or sick) guy!

Well, you're President now, show us the proof.

Contradicting Trump, DOJ Admits There Is No Evidence Of Trump Tower Wiretaps

Quote
In a brief filed late on Friday, the Department of Justice confirmed that it has no evidence to support President Donald Trump’s assertions this spring that he was the target of surveillance by the Obama administration while running for office last year.

The motion, filed in response to a lawsuit from the pro-transparency group American Oversight, notes that “both FBI and NSD confirm that they have no records related to wiretaps as described” by Trump.

We get letters!

Exclusive: Read the Inauguration Day letter Obama left for Trump

It all seems like good advice, but it takes two for good advice to work.

Former British Spy and current spy novelist John le Carré was on NPR's "Fresh Air" today.

Asked about his sense of Trump and Russia, he said, "They have him by the short hairs."

He believes that whatever kompromat they have on Trump is not something they had to lure him into, like with hookers, but illegal deals he sought out, that they have none-the-less have knowledge of because of the people involved.

I am quite confident that there will be prompt disaster relief and Federal aid with respect to any damage to the Mar-a-lago club and course.

Yup ... it's a widespread failure to understand honesty beyond the absolute shallowest level.

Meanwhile, in yet another alternative universe:

"After the meeting, Trump boarded a plane to North Dakota with Democratic Sen. Heidi Heitkamp in an effort to garner bipartisan support for tax legislation that Republican leaders on Capitol Hill are crafting on a purely partisan basis. That continued the day of bizarre disconnects between the president and the leaders of his party.

Trump called Heitkamp to the stage at his Dakota event and praised her as a “good woman.” She will be running for re-election against a Republican in November 2018.

Aboard Air Force One, Trump told reporters, “We had a very good meeting with Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.” He didn’t mention Republicans McConnell and House Speaker Paul Ryan, who also had been present. “We agreed to a three-month extension on debt ceiling, which they consider to be sacred, very important.”

Newsweek: Mueller Is ‘Going for the Kill’ on Trump-Russia Investigation, Republicans Believe: Report

Quote
...Members of the GOP are said to have come to that stark conclusion based on Mueller’s hiring of lawyers experienced in dealing with money laundering crimes and the Mafia, as well as the intensity of his pursuit of both witnesses and evidence.

Quote
Despite Trump’s repeated insistence that he has been told he is not personally under investigation, the president is possibly facing very real personal consequences. Based on conversations with White House aides, Axios says that Mueller is narrowing in on a possible charge of obstruction of justice against the president...

Despite all of this, Trump is not thought to be considering firing Mueller, according to Axios. Doing so, Trump associates said, would be as bad as “firing the pope.”

Popes have been fired before, however. Benedict IX got run off three times.

The Truth can hurt sometimes.

Are you referring to his religious viewpoint (which he is entitled to) or the bad optics of his proselytizing in politics?

On reports tonight that Trump had struck a not-completely-draconian deal with the Dems that meant some continuation of DACA and no wall...

Quote
The House's foremost immigration hardliner, GOP Rep. Steve King of Iowa, made clear that he, for one, was not happy.

Addressing Trump over Twitter, King wrote that if the reports were true, "Trump base is blown up, destroyed, irreparable, and disillusioned beyond repair. No promise is credible."

Well, if what King says is true, that sounds like quite the win-win.

He's been backpedaling on this - further eroding his credibility.  He didn't start with much - what really does he have left?
