Some of the few occurrences in 20th century lit...

1946: "His legato notes in the seventh bar with the reaching note in the eighth is great inspiration. After a sad trombone release Dodds plays the end of the chorus."


1963
: "Then, far off and low in the hills, he heard the sad trombone bay of a boat horn... trahn-dooon."


1973: "Somewhere a night-running hound loosed a sad, trombone bay. Chad reached for his knife, listening..."
