1  Practice Break / Found on the 'Net / Re: Interesting Getzen on: Mar 28, 2015, 10:18AM
I have one of these. Bought it at a Garage sale maybe 20 25 years ago. The horn plays very well. I`ve used it many times as a novelty on Dixie gigs and once & a while on an Avante Garde gig.
2  Horns, Gear, and Equipment / Mouthpieces / What mouthpiece is this ?? on: Mar 27, 2015, 09:17AM
I was watching this Craig Harris Video and the mouthpiece has me stumped. Is it a Megatone Bach, Curry?
Anybody have an idea?

I`ve just been checking out some LIVE recordings by Trombonist Charlie Small. Amazing !!!! I`m not that familiar with his playing. What horn did he play anyone know.

I`ll be interested to see what happens. I`ll post my results when I get the bell. If anything It`ll look kind of cool.

Interesting stuff but it makes me glad I play tenor with no valves. Makes life so much easier.

Any body play a nickel bell?
8  Horns, Gear, and Equipment / Instruments / 2nd Bell for my 2B on: Mar 22, 2015, 05:03AM
I have an older 2B slide/valve horn. I really like the valve side and have mixed feelings about the slide side. Sometimes it just feels too tight. Anyway.... I was in my favorite repair shop yesterday and was talking with the  tech and noticed a whole bunch of bell sections. One was an old H.N. White nickel tempo bell section. Needed some TLC but was in good shape. The case with the valve and slide section in it is really heavy which is also a reason  it doesn`t see the light of day much. But to have 2 complete horns would be cool. So he`s going to rehab the tempo bell for me, says it will look like new.
Looking forward to getting it and seeing how the nickel bell plays different and sounds different than the yellow brass bell on both sides of the horn.
9  Horns, Gear, and Equipment / Mouthpieces / Re: Vincent Bach Artisan 7C on: Mar 20, 2015, 05:47AM
I really like the "Look" of the mouthpiece. Cool design, but it feels like it wants to suck my chops into it. I`ve had a couple of mouthpieces like that in the past. A Gold plated Mount Vernon 12C I had was like that. Couldn`t play it for very long as it wanted to just suck my face into the cup.

I normally play a Mount Vernon 7C. I purchased an Artisan 7C  awhile ago. I too noticed that it felt smaller than all my other 7C`s. I didn`t like the sound I got with it on my small tenors but I tried it on my Bass trumpet and bingo - perfect fit , for me anyway.

14  Horns, Gear, and Equipment / Instruments / Re: Versatile Small Horn? on: Mar 11, 2015, 07:14PM
I would recommend the following

Bach 12 or 16M (smaller)
Bach 36 or Conn 78H (medium)
Conn 32H (1/2 way in between) .500/.522 Great horn
15  Horns, Gear, and Equipment / Mouthpieces / Re: What DE size do you guys use, for .525 horns on: Mar 08, 2015, 06:27AM
I have a Mount Vernon Lt36 and it`s great playing horn , however.. When I bought the DE mouthpiece the horn performs the best it ever has. Completely even from pedal Bb to high F. I use a 98 rim E cup & F backbore

Maybe a 48H  or in my opinion, one of the best .500 bore horns out there is the Bach 12.

19  Horns, Gear, and Equipment / Instruments / Re: Bach 16M slide + Bach 36 Bell on: Feb 21, 2015, 06:37AM
Along a similar road, years ago I was playing a Conn 32H (.500/.522) with a 7 1/2" bell. I swapped my 78H bell (8") on the 32H and it opened the sound up, more spread and a little more punch.
20  Horns, Gear, and Equipment / Mouthpieces / Re: Mt. Vernon Vs. Bach Corp. on: Feb 21, 2015, 06:33AM
I`ve played 7C`s my entire career  and have always had really good results, range, sound, flexibility, etc..
Then about 15 years ago I got my 1st Mount Vernon 7C. WOW!!! Huge difference (for me)The tone was darker, Even my section mates commented on the difference. I`ve gone back from time to time to my original 7C and there is a difference.
I now have mount Vernons on all my horns except my large bore & that`s a Doug Elliot.
