Hey y'all,

I'm excited to share that I'm joining the CalArts brass faculty in the fall to succeed Jim Miller as trombone instructor and teaching brass studio class. Alex Iles is the trombone instructor for the jazz department as well, and secondary lessons are also available with him for non-jazz performance majors (which I plan to encourage my students to do).

The program has a heavy contemporary music, improv, and composition focus, with excellent programs also available in non western music (Javanese and Balinese gamelan, North Indian Classical Music, Ghanaian drumming and dance, and Persian Music), Jazz, electronic music, a growing amount of early music, and a wide range of classes from other departments (art, dance, theater, animation, film) to take.  The school is admittedly expensive, but the current brass enrollment is lower than normal so there's potentially more aid available than normal.

More information about the brass department can be found here:https://music.calarts.edu/programs/brass. If you or someone you know is interested please feel free to PM here or email me at zythobone... at...gmail

And my calarts page:https://music.calarts.edu/faculty-and-staff/matt-barbier

Luke Storm (https://music.calarts.edu/programs/brass/program-faculty/luke-storm) will also be joining the faculty to co-direct the brass ensemble with Ed Carroll. Allen Fogel and Doug Tornquist teach horn and tuba, respectively.

The side note in this is pinch me as I did my MFA at CalArts with Jim and Alex so following up Jim and being on a faculty with Alex still feels like a crazy dream. But also, I hope, will help me advise potential students since I attended the school in the not so distant past.
